Social Distancing in Schools

What is Social Distancing?

Social distancing is a non-pharmaceutical infection prevention and control intervention implemented to avoid/decrease contact between those who are infected with a disease causing pathogen and those who are not, so as to stop or slow down the rate and extent of disease transmission in a community. This eventually leads to decrease in spread, morbidity and mortality due to the disease.

In public health, social distancing, also called physical distancing, is a set of non-pharmaceutical interventions or measures intended to prevent the spread of a contagious disease by maintaining a physical distance between people and reducing the number of times people come into close contact with each other. It typically involves keeping a certain distance from others (the distance specified may differ from time to time and country to country) and avoiding gathering together in large groups. By reducing the probability that a given uninfected person will come into physical contact with an infected person, the disease transmission can be suppressed, resulting in fewer deaths. The measures are used in combination with good respiratory hygiene and hand washing by a population. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the World Health Organization (WHO) suggested favouring the term “physical distancing” as opposed to “social distancing”, in keeping with the fact that it is a physical distance which prevents transmission; people can remain socially connected via technology. To slow down the spread of infectious diseases and avoid overburdening healthcare systems, particularly during a pandemic, several social-distancing measures are used, including the closing of schools and workplaces, isolation, quarantine, restricting the movement of people and the cancellation of mass gatherings

Social distancing is maintained to stop the spread of virus and infections. You should avoid close contact with anyone you do not live with. That is called social distancing. It means avoiding crowded, public places where close contact with others is likely. It leads to cancelling events and gathering of more than 10 people and closing shops, restaurants and bars. It is essential way to slow down the spread of virus among each other. It is important that you follow social distancing recommendations in your community, weather you’re in one of the high-risk group or not.

Why Social Distancing is important?

Social distancing is important because:

Social Distancing in School

Due to Corona virus school term came to an abrupt end, following the announcement that schools would be close to the majority of children. However it would remain open for those who have key worker patents, as well as vulnerable children. When schools will reopen for majority of children social distancing should be required to keep distance from others to limit the spreading of virus.

It is discussed to for school re-opening that it will work in phased manner to stop too many individuals sharing the school environment at one time. As we know physical distancing, hand hygiene, and other critical behaviour will be essential in each sector.

The first and most important measure is to ensure that those display any symptoms of virus do not enter the school where it is children, patent, or any visitors. The virus that caused Corona virus mainly transmits through droplets generated when an infected person coughs, sneezes or speaks. These are too heavy to hang in the air. They quickly fall on surfaces. It is advised to follow steps on social distancing, hand washing and other hygiene measures, and cleansing of surfaces.

Some of the measures that are suggested for maintaining social distancing in schools are:

Use a hybrid approach that combines face-to-face and online instruction.

Instead of having all students return to school at once, you might consider using a hybrid approach to learning that combines face-to-face and online instruction.
For instance, you might have students attend school in person two days a week and learn online three days a week. Half the students in each class could attend on Mondays and Wednesdays, and the other half could attend on Tuesdays and Thursdays. On Fridays, you could have everyone working from home online while custodial staff deep cleans the building.

Another approach might be to have student’s alternate weeks of face-to-face and online instruction. One cohort could attend school for weeks one and three of the month and learn remotely from home during weeks two and four, and the other cohort could follow the opposite schedule.

All educational settings are advised to follow the Public Health England (PHE) guidance on cleaning for non-healthcare settings. Schools should clean and disinfect equipment, toys and surfaces more regularly. This includes keyboards, mouse, tables, chairs, door handles, light switches and banisters. Bins for tissues should be emptied throughout the day.

Staff, children, young people and families should be reminded to wash their hands for 20 seconds more frequently than normal, including on arrival at the setting, before and after eating, and after sneezing or coughing.
